enterprise task 4

Who am I competing against?
Other designers who share an interest with editorial design, work for magazine/books. Type driven, experimental, print based work. Which seems to be a popular area within graphic design, a lot of designers i know are interested in focussing on editorial design.

What do they offer?
A range of different ways of working, different style, different ways of approaching a brief and different ideas. I just need to make sure that my work will stand above them. Also experience, i suppose experience within design will be something that clients/competitors will be looking for which is something that at the minute i have very little of. I need to start trying to build up my commissioned work to prepare myself for industry, not only to get some experience but to expand my knowledge of how the industry works.

What makes me better?
I think I am quite lucky as to were i chose to study my degree, studying at Leeds College of art has given me a real drive and passion for design. Also has equipped me with a huge knowledge of typography and design which is what i feel makes me better than competition. Also another thing which makes me better i feel my work is very experimental, concept driven, i always try to do something which hasnt been done before, which hopefully will be something clients/employers will pick up on.

What makes me different?

My approach to design, I try to produce/work in a way which has not been done before, try to apply different processes to producing work which is relevant to the brief and will also add a unique aspect to my work.

Here are 2 examples form the past 2 briefs of second year, within the swarovski brief me and mitch tried to apply theory behind the design work, producing all the imagery used within the designs using refraction of light through crystals. Then using photoshop edited these photographs to create the unique patterns.

Also with the codex brief which was to produce the design work for a modern science exhibition, most fo the design work was produced using processing software, using html code to create patterns and shapes to include within the designs. This was done to add some theory behind the design work to make it more relevant towards the brief and just to add an interesting aspect to it.

Another thing which makes me different from competition is that i have quite a large background of illustration, due to only recently deciding to move away from it and focus more on graphic design. However one of my focusses for 3rd year is to find a way to apply illustration within my graphic design work which will hopefully be something that makes me different from competition.
