TASK 3 - SAMPLES OF WORK (Research & Analysis)

Self Promotion
Şahsi Kimlik Çalışması
Creative self promotions, really simple but effective idea here. Something i wouldnt really do for myself however the idea and concept behind it is really clever, instantly recognisable and engaging with clients. Good way to get your message across. Strengths; unique, clever, engaging. Weakness; visual consistency of the design throughout all outcomes becomes a bit repetitive and dull, especially with the colour limitations, maybe should stick to using the word search design to only a few of the promotional material. Opportunities; minimalise the use of the design and combine with strong typography on other pieces of self promotional things to really boost the designs, also maybe try with different stocks and print finishes. Threats; it's unique, engaging, if i saw this i would definitely pick it up and look at it, means my self promotion needs to be much better.

  • Gary Corr Made Easy
    Hand-Made Self Promotion Direct Mailer

Another clever unique concept behind these self promotional materials.  hand-made direct mailer to send out to potential employers, it contains links to an online portfolio as well as other bits and pieces to engage with with clients and really gather interest. The idea behind all these are great, however the overall design work itself isnt too strong, weak layout and typography really loose the quality that Gary could of achieved with his designs, also i see why their is a black and white colour limitation however it really does nothing in terms of making him stand out against competition.

Self Promotion - Karina Cahyadi

Promotional material by karina cahyadi, instead of just sending a client a business card with a link to your work, send them a publication highlighting and showcasing your layout skills and explaining to the client/customer why they should employ you. Clever concept, would be something i would consider using when trying to find work/a job.

Poemotion is an interactive book-object. The abstract graphical patterns in this small volume are set in motion as soon as you move the attached special foil across them: moiré effects allow complex forms to develop, set circles in motion and make graphical patterns vibrate. Inspired by Seesaw, an earlier book from the publisher, in a playful and at the same time minimalist way the Japanese designer Takahiro Kurashima establishes a link to the motif of a “School of Seeing” that has long occupied a special place in the program of Lars Müller Publishers. With this book the viewer can discover how, as if by magic, figures and forms are created out of optical overlays, set in motion and then disappear again. In the era of digitalization this book shows that interactivity is also possible in the format of the analogous, bound book.

Shanning Wan
Clever concept for this CV kind of hit and miss though, the reader has to be a web designer him/herself or have a knowledge of web design to really understand it, without this understanding it would just look a bit, naffff.
also the CV does not actually show whever the designer is particularly good at web design.

  • Dragon Card
    Yurko Gutsulyak
Dragon Card is a New Year greeting form Graphic Design Studio by Yurko Gutsulyak to its clients, partners and friends. It is a wish to be courageous in one’s decisions and strong in overcoming obstacles. To tame a dragon is to achieve success.

  • Portfolio
    Katharina Seiler
Handmade book showcasing the designers, really showcases the designers work well, as well as hand craft skills. However i would image the cost of producing these books to be quite high aswel as the production time.

STUDY TASK 2 - industrial experience

What is Industrial experience?

Visiting or working at a professional design studio; to get a overall feel of the studio environment, how the studio runs and whever you would fit in. Maybe having the opportunity to collaborate with professionals or work on a live brief yourself. What can you learn from industrial experience?

How a studio environment runs, whever you would fit in with the overall vibe of the studio and their work ethics. Learn new techniques, and new ways of working and how to approach live briefs. You could also learn how to communicate with clients and designers themselves in order to build up a large number of networks within the industry.

What form/format could industrial experience take?

Free lance working, internships and job placements, looking around a design studio to see how it runs or even speaking with clients over the phone or via emails.

What areas of industry are you interested in?

Illustration, editorial design, advertising, free lance sales, branding and identity, typography.

What are your concerns about industrial experience?

Nerves, best ways to approach meeting up with a designer and giving them the best first impression. Finding the correct studios to visit, places what are relevant to my practice so i am not wasting my time. Earning enough money and getting started in the industry.
