internship application for snask

saw this the other day, i wasnt really too sure on the content or the way it looked as a whole but the concept behind it was really clever. Doing something to make you stand out from the competition, not just sending an email asking for an internship but actually going ahead and spending the time creating something different and personal for each studio to make it look like you really would like to work there.

PPD task

5 Things I know now that I didn't before the break:

- How intense being a third year would be.
- How to negotiate/write out and come up a set of briefs that will develop my practice in the right direction throughout 3rd year.
- How Dutch designers 'Main studio', design their work around the content rather than focussing on purely aesthetics, and how it is important to let the content dictate the design. Designing for purpose - form follows function.
- How nice Amsterdam is, in terms of the city itself as well as all the design/graphic design around the city.
- Some of the 'politics' within graphic design that we were told about from Studio Lauke Sieben, how power is all dependant on language and depending what country yo are from/what language you speak.

5 Things I would address differently than I did this summer:

- would of liked to visit Berlin as well as Amsterdam to see some studios and design work over there.
- Got more involved with self branding/online presence.
- Got more of my dissertation finished.
- Done more design work, try to do at least on piece of design work per week to keep my brain thinking.
- Wouldn't of got fired so i would of been able to save up loads of money.

5 Specific things I will address this Semester that should be useful:

- Focus on type, fully develop my type skills to get more ready for the area of graphic design that i wish to focus myself within, editorial design.
- Work on briefs that i have an interest in, in order to stay fully interested on each brief and produce a body of work that i am happy with.
- Begin putting together my portfolio/producing work for my portfolio.
- Make sure i keep in contact with studios from Amsterdam, try to arrange a placement there for when i finish.
- Work on live briefs to try and get my work out into the public domain and seen by people.

5 or more things I feel we could address as a group:

- Best way to keep in touch with professionals without feeling like you are just 'nagging' them.
- How to go about arranging/asking for a placement.
- How to put together an effective portfolio.
- Advice on what to do after uni: placements? freelance? studio?
- How to set up a design studio.

5 Things I feel we have not looked at in PPD that I personally would like to know more about with reference to professionalism:

- The 'money' side of graphic design, how much to charge?
- Looking into tax? explain all that because i do not know nothing about it.
- Would it be feasible to set up a design studio after uni? and how would you go about doing this?
- What past students on this course are up to after uni? Where abouts do they work and how did they achieve getting where they are.
- Bring in some past students to explain what they did after uni and how they got where they are today.
